How to play the word guess game
Your goal is to find a hidden five-letter English word in six guesses or fewer. Type any five letters with your keyboard or the on-screen keys and press Enter. Each tile then changes colour: green means the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means the letter appears somewhere else in the word, and grey means the letter is not in the answer at all. Use those clues to narrow the possibilities with every row.
There are two modes. Daily mode gives every player the same puzzle on the same calendar day, so you can compare results with friends using the Share button, which copies an emoji grid without spoiling the word. Unlimited mode picks a random word each round, so you can keep practising as long as you like. Your statistics, streak and settings are saved only in your own browser.
Tips and strategy
- Open with common letters. Starting words that use E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S or N (for example stare, crane or alert) reveal the most information.
- Don't waste greens. On guess two, try a word with new letters to test more of the alphabet, then combine what you learn on guess three.
- Watch for double letters. Words such as apple, sheep or hello repeat a letter. If you are stuck, consider a repeat.
- Think about letter positions. A yellow letter can be ruled out of the spot where it appeared, which often leaves only one or two options.
- Use the keyboard colours. The on-screen keys show what you have already tried, so you never repeat a grey letter by accident.
About this game
Guess-the-word games have a long history, from the pen-and-paper code game Jotto in the 1950s to the TV show Lingo and the many daily web puzzles of recent years. This version is a lightweight, independent take on the format: a single page with no ads inside the game, no accounts and no tracking scripts. Once loaded, it also works offline, so you can add it to your home screen and play on a train or plane.
The answer list is made of common, everyday English words, not obscure dictionary entries. By default any five letters are accepted as a guess; switch on the word-list check in Settings if you prefer a stricter game.
